The characteristics of an effective educator

My thoughts are it's important to understand that some characteristics of effective teachers are natural while others can be learned. I believe there are many ways to be a good teacher, and it takes practice. The educator has to recognize their strengths and work on those characteristics that don't come naturally.

I strongly believe that educators should have someone to guide and facilitate them on their educational journey. They should have a sense of where her/his students need help. The teacher needs to reflect constantly on their teaching and learning, in order to inform further teaching and learning. The need to encourage students to reflect on their on own learning and set goals accordingly. An educator needs to be open-minded, needs to be open to new ideas, ready to try new things, listen to their student, willing to change with the times. That will include being open to using new technology and being prepared to step aside and let the students take control.

I think that educators today should be able to present students with a problem, facilitate their efforts to solve that problem and should have empathy when interacting with their students. They also need core knowledge in all subjects areas and they need to be risk-takers and learners with their students. Lastly, the educator needs to engage in authentic activities with their students. A good educator should  be ready to help with finding the right tools, but most importantly they will help motivate and enthuse students.
